The story starts on a train ride through America, during which Grenfall Lorry, the hero, encounters a mysterious and charming woman, Miss Guggenslocker. The lady was travelling with her aunt and uncle is a native of Graustark, a little-known country in Eastern Europe. After Miss Guggenslocker returns to her homeland, Grenfall and his friend decide to go to this obscure place. But confusion sets in when they reach there as none of the citizens have heard of anyone named Guggenslocker.
