"The Castle of Otranto" is a novel by Horace Walpole, generally regarded as the first gothic novel. In the second edition, Walpole used the word "gothic" in the subtitle – "A Gothic Story." The story is set in a haunted castle. The events develop in the spirit of medievalism and terror, which became a standard mod for the genre ever since.
