The Ebony Stick is a short story from a series of novels and stories featuring the fictional Chinese American detective Charlie Chan. The plot was inspired by the author's encounter with a real-life Chinese detective Chang Apana, a prototype of Charlie Chan. Many of the stories were adapted to the screen and became the classics of early detective cinematography.
