This novel tells the story of a London businessman John Sairson who had purchased a lodge some five years ago, after Sir George Lugard, had been found dead in the library, with a revolver in his hand. Some referred to it as suicide while others suspected homicide. However, some believe that Sir George had been badly treated. He had been robbed of his property by John Sairson in connection with some transaction. Mr. Sairson didn't come to the Grange very often. He had a wife and two daughters, and there was some speculation about a son, but no one seemed certain. One thing was certain: Mr. Sairson was involved in shady business. Then, Mr. Sairson sends a telegram telling his wife to expect a stranger, who has rented the Dower's house to inquire about a nearby property, but it turns out Cecil Lugard is no stranger at all. Mr. Sairson's daughter, Nest had previously met him in Switzerland, and their rekindled relationship terrified her mother. Is the stranger Mr. Lugard's son?
