The plot revolves around the life of Margery, a young and beautiful lower-class lady. She's engaged to James Hayward. During a visit to her grandmother's house, she comes across a man who is about to commit suicide and unwittingly saves him. The man is a Baron, and he is grateful to her. The Baron promises to grant any of her wishes, and she expresses her desire to attend a ball and dance like a noble lady. Margery's dream of living her life to the fullest is realized by the Baron. She quickly becomes endeared to the Baron, who reciprocates her feelings. However, both are aware of the barriers that stand in the way of such a relationship. Margery is already engaged to a young man, and there is a huge social gap between her and the Baron, which was extremely important according to Victorian norms. Will Margery eventually break up her engagement with James Hayward and marry the Baron?
