The story opens in a London hospital, where Nellie Nugent, a young Irishwoman, is starting her novitiate as a nurse. Her first patient is a young man whom she cares for until he recovers under the supervision of nurse Deborah Gray, her friend. This is a fascinating love story with a dramatic thread and a sensational and exciting plot. Detective Chief Inspector Pointer is in trouble. Specifically, he has a dead body and two women who claim him as their husband. Pointer is left to wonder about the identity of the dead man and how he came to be lying in a beach hut with his head smashed in.
